You will aboard of the sailing vessel J/35 called "Aorangi" Built by Tillotson-Pearson International (TPI), a company with a long history of excellence in fiberglass composite construction. Both hull and deck are constructed with end-grain balsa wood core material between layers of biaxial and unidirectional fiberglass cloth. TPI was one of the first production boat builders to utilize these materials that allow the builder to align the direction of the strands of fiberglass cloth to the forces that occur under load. The result is generally a stronger composite for a given weight

"Aorangi" has a very smooth hull shape and a narrow bow section for good penetration power in a chop. 4400 pounds of ballast give the boat excellent stability, and the deep high aspect ratio.

The rig of the J/35 features a tall bendy section and is designed to optimize upwind performance with a very high aspect foretriangle and off-the-wind performance with her huge main and spinnakers.

The interior layout of the J/35 was clearly designed to minimize weight and to concentrate the heaviest components down low over the keel. This has not been done, however, at the expense of comfort and style. Efforts to offer good cruising accommodations in a race-conscious interior have resulted in a wonderfully unobstructed interior plan ideal for both racing and cruising. Twelve feet of beam and over six feet of headroom have given "Aorangi" a lot to work with.

Careful attention has been given to every detail of this design. The hull shape is exceptional... The deck layout is ideal... And the interior is appealing.
